Moto G6: Release date, price and specs rumours for Motorola’s new budget smartphone

It may be due to the brand’s smartphone legacy, but the Moto G range has always garnered more publicity than is often afforded to cheaper devices. This year is no exception. Rumours suggest 2018’s lineup of budget smartphones from Motorola is set to include a Moto G6, a Moto G6 Plus, and the Moto G6 Play.

Tantalisingly, Amazon recently leaked (and then swiftly deleted) a link to a handset purporting to be the Moto G6. It certainly looked the part, but the link’s £239 price tag would be something we’d see as a better fit for the higher-spec G6 Plus model, so the leak may need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

As ever, nothing’s set in stone. Below we’ve rounded up all the information on the Moto G6, to give you a reasonably good idea of what it’s going to look like and we’ll keep this page updated to give you a more concrete picture of its release date, specs and price as the launch day approaches.

Moto G6 release date

Given that the Moto G5 debuted at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 with aplomb, we’d have put money on its predecessor launching at this year’s MWC. Alas, this was not the case, but the excitement is nonetheless palpable, with a release date expected in a matter of weeks.

We weren’t bowled away by the Motorola Moto G5, it must be said. The king of budget smartphones did not live up to its former glory, despite its sleek design; the camera wasn’t great in low light, and there was little tangible improvement from the Motorola Moto G4.

Nonetheless, we’re staying positive for this year’s offering, particularly with rumours of Moto G6 Play abounding. Could the king of budget smartphones be about to make one hell of a comeback?

Moto G6: Specs

Specs have been mulled over at DroidLife, which recently claimed the new installment of the Moto G line will resemble the Moto X4, which sports a glassy back and puck-style camera.

The Moto G6 is also rumoured to have a 3,000mAh battery, as well as being powered by a 1.8Ghz Snapdragon 450 chip. Word of a 5.7in screen has been bandied around, with the G6 looking set to receive a FHD+ (2160 x 1080) display to boot.

When it comes to cameras, it is anticipated that the the Moto G6 will have a 16-megapixel snapper, with a dual camera setup on the back, sporting both 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors.

Moto G6 Play: Specs

A recent leak from TrendyTechz appears to show the Moto G6 Play, along with a 3D render. They’re not the highest quality snaps, but the phone itself certainly seems to pack a punch, featuring a sleek, curved-edge design.

It’s more than a tad reminiscent of the (far more expensive) Moto 4X, with an impressive set of specs to match: we’re anticipating a 5.7in, 18:9 HD screen, with 16-megapixel front and rear cameras, and a – frankly enormous – 4,000mAh battery. Not bad at all.

Moto G6 Plus: Specs

Meanwhile, the Moto G6 Plus is said to be the most high-spec phone in Motorola’s new budget lineup. It is said, by DroidLife, to feature Qualcomm’s 2.2GHz Snapdragon 630 chip – the same one powering mid-range handsets such as the Sony Xperia XA2 and the HTC U11.

Its screen will be slightly amped up, rumours suggest, giving it a 5.93in display compared to its younger siblings’ 5.7in ones. There’ll be a bigger battery to boot: 3,200mAh to be exact.

History tells us the Plus variant of the Moto G has always sported a better quality camera, so we’d certainly predict that to be the case here. Just how superior the camera will be, we’re not yet sure. Stay tuned for more information.

Moto G6: UK price and colours

When it comes to the Moto 6G price, we’re speculating, but we reckon the Moto G6 Play will retail in the region of £130. Meanwhile, we’d take a punt that the Moto G6 and G6 Plus will cost about £170 and £250 respectively.

The recent Amazon leak priced the Moto G6 for pre-order at £239, although we reckon this more likely pertained to the Moto G6 Plus, for which it’s a more feasible price tag. The link has since disappeared from Amazon, but it certainly whetted our appetite.

Meanwhile, as far as colours go, rumours are abundant… and varied. While DroidLife has predicted an oasis of colour, including teal, silver, black and rose options for the Moto G6, and dark blue, charcoal and gold for the Moto G6 Play. Coming up against this is Android Headlines, which has leaked a series of high-res images purporting to show the Moto G6 Plus. This, it stipulates, will be available in five different colours: gold, silver, white, blue and cyan, no less.
